Cartograms and Circular-Arc Simplification of Polygonal Subdivisions

چکیده
Cartograms are proportional drawings of maps where the areas of all countries correspond to prescribed weights. Besides the property of being a proportional representation it is essential for the quality of a cartogram that the countries are not too badly deformed. A good clarity can only be achieved if all countries can easily be identified by the reader due to the fact that their principal topological properties have been carried over from the original map to the cartogram. In this thesis we investigate an approach to generate cartograms based on a deformation of borders between different countries. In particular, we allow to replace straight line segments with circular arcs in order to transfer area from one country to another. The countries in the resulting cartograms look thus a bit like clouds or flakes, depending on whether the edges were bent outwards or inwards. We introduce several problem variants and show that they are all NP -hard. Then we propose some relaxations aiming to simplify the problem so that it can be resolved efficiently. First a relaxation of the area constraint is considered where a deviation of the attained area from the prescribed area can be tolerated. Then we suggest relaxations of the vertex-related constraints. A heuristic based on the area relaxation and using a max-flow algorithm is then presented. This heuristic has been implemented and an evaluation has been conducted by showcasing some visual output from the implementation.

Testing Shortcuts to Maintain Simplicity in Subdivision Simplification
Cartographers collect more data than they need, and so must simplify coastlines, boundaries, and other linear features to display a map at a given scale. Many simplification methods, however, can introduce intersections that were not originally present, corrupting the features. Kulik suggests a simple shortcut operation for polygonal lines: remove a point pi and connect its former neighbors pi−...
متن کاملAn Efficient and Simple Quad Edge Conversion of Polygonal Mainfold Objects
This paper presents an efficient and simple quad edge conversion method of polygonal (manifold) objects. In a wide variety of applications such as scientific visualization, virtual reality and computer aided geometric design, polygonal objects are expected to be visualized and manipulated within a given time constraint. To achieve these expectations, it is necessary to introduce an efficient da...
متن کاملSimplified Approach for Torsional Analysis of Non-homogenous Tubes with Non-circular Cross-sections
In this paper a method is presented for torsional analysis of non-homogeneous tubes with arbitrarily shaped cross-sections. A previously presented method based on Bredt’s theory is extended to achieve formulas for torsional analysis. Shear modulus varies through the thickness according to a power law distribution. To validate the accuracy of the presented formulas for angle of twist and shear s...
متن کاملHydrodynamic and Sediment Responses of Open Channels to Exposed Pipe Encasements
The effects of exposed pipe encasements on the local variation of hydrodynamic and sediment conditions in a river channel are examined. Laboratory experiments are performed to assess the response of water level, flow regime and bed deformation to several representative types of concrete encasements. The experimental conditions considered are: three types of exposed pipe encasements exposed on t...
متن کاملOn Rectangular Cartograms
A rectangular cartogram is a type of map where every region is a rectangle. The size of the rectangles is chosen such that their areas represent a geographic variable (e.g., population). Good rectangular cartograms are hard to generate: The area specifications for each rectangle may make it impossible to realize correct adjacencies between the regions and so hamper the intuitive understanding o...
